Setting the course for the future: With the position paper “Intelligent robotics for the future”, Baden-Württemberg is positioning itself as a center of innovation for intelligent human-robot systems.

In the upcoming years, strong growth is expected in the market for AI-based robotics. We want to take advantage of this enormous economic opportunity for our country,” said Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister for Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism.

Enormous economic opportunity for the State of Baden-Württemberg

“Excellent basic research, comprehensive application-oriented development and an effective transfer from science to industry form the foundation for Baden-Württemberg's future viability. With Cyber Valley, for example, Europe's largest and leading center for excellence in artificial intelligence (AI) and modern robotics, we have been promoting research and transfer for almost ten years - and have thus built up a powerful ecosystem of science, start-ups, SMEs and industry. We want to strategically strengthen and expand this network in the coming years,” said Petra Olschowski, Minister of Science, Research and Arts Baden-Württemberg.

The position paper published by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor and Tourism and the Ministry of Science, Research and Art pursues a clear vision: Baden-Württemberg will be the leading innovation region for intelligent human-robotics systems by 2035.

Five spheres of action

In order to achieve this vision for the future, the stakeholders of the Baden-Württemberg AI-based robotics innovation ecosystem have defined five fields of action. These address the areas of

  • Research, development and transfer,
  • scalability and integration capability,
  • qualification and skilled workers,
  • collaboration, visibility and acceptance as well as
  • regulatory framework conditions.

Together with the stakeholders of the innovation ecosystem, the fields of action will be further advanced in the short to medium term with the aim of increasing the visibility of AI-based robotics beyond the borders of Baden-Württemberg and positioning Baden-Württemberg as a strategic partner for the modern robotics of the future.

“With our strong innovation ecosystem for AI-based robotics in Baden-Württemberg, we have outstanding expertise and the prerequisites to be a pioneer for future value creation. Human-centered and AI-based robotics is not only a technological innovation, but also a catalyst for economic growth and social change,” says Prof. Dr. Katharina Hölzle, Technology Commissioner to the Minister of Economic Affairs and initiator of the position paper.

Great innovation potential for the industry

Baden-Württemberg is one of Europe's leading regions in the field of robotics and automation. With a strong industrial base, world-renowned companies and excellent research, our state plays a central role in the development of innovative robotics solutions. Particularly in the areas of Industry 4.0, medical technology and artificial intelligence, business and science are working together to drive technological progress. The field of service robotics is also becoming increasingly important and is seen as a key future market.

Human-centered, intelligent robotics offers great innovation potential for Baden-Württemberg's industry. Baden-Württemberg is excellently positioned in many application fields such as the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, logistics and medical technology and can secure important competitive advantages through AI-based robotics. Other sectors such as agriculture and construction or household and care offer great potential for the future.
