ICT made in THE LÄND
Baden-Württemberg is one of the innovation drivers in Germany's ICT sector
The state has a leading position in the area of information and communication technology (ICT). The third-largest industry, after automotive and engineering, is thus a pillar of the state’s economic development. One of the reasons for this is the high density of potential customers, for example from automotive, engineering or medical technology.
The roughly 16,000 ICT companies in the Southwest employ more than 200,000 people and generate revenue of approximately 60 million euros per year. All aspects of the ICT sector are represented, ranging from global market leaders for business software to specialized service providers and the growing start-up scene.

Why Baden-Württemberg is ideal for your expansion plans:
The ICT sector is traditionally a strong sector in Baden-Württemberg. After Silicon Valley, THE LÄND is the world’s most important location for business software. High-profile names in the industry are based here. These include global corporations like IBM and SAP, but also smaller firms such as Team Viewer, Bechtle or GFT.
Our companies know that ICT is a driver of economic success as a cross-sectional technology. This is why they are moving forward with technologies of the future like cloud computing, artificial intelligence, quantum computing and virtual reality.
The advantage: You can benefit from a strong industrial environment that taps its potential.
Part of Baden-Württemberg’s status as an ICT location involves an outstanding environment for research. Roughly 40 per cent of R&D investment across Germany is made in Baden-Württemberg. In addition, the scientific institutions there are setting standards in information and communication technology. One example is the supercomputer for science and business at the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS).
Research into information technologies in Baden-Württemberg takes place at universities as well as at non-academic institutions, including several Fraunhofer institutes and the FZI Research Center for Information Technology in Karlsruhe, which supports small and medium-sized companies in adapting ICT. Outstanding universities are also training highly qualified graduates.
The advantage: You are investing in a region with a pronounced culture of innovation.
Networks and clusters bring together multipliers from different areas of the ICT sector. This allows for synergies that benefit all sides. The corporate network Baden-Württemberg Connected (bwcon) as well as the regional cluster initiative Cyberforum with more than 1,000 members also play a significant role.
Initiatives by the state government round off the collaboration. Additionally, there are numerous clusters relating to IT applications in major industries like automotive, aerospace and media or engineering.
The advantage: You benefit from synergies that our strong networks offer you.
